A New Era: Better Society Capital and the Power of Strategic Storytelling
We’re happy to share the news about an exciting change in the social investment landscape: Big Society Capital's transformation into Better Society Capital. We've been privileged to create captivating content across the UK for this trailblazer, and it's time to spill the beans on why this rebranding is more than just a change of moniker.
The organisation, founded as Big Society Capital, has invested £925 million of its own capital since launching in 2012 and used that to unlock a further nearly £3 billion from other investors, all channelled to organisations tackling social issues
The new name will help better affirm the organisation’s mission to grow investment into social issues in the UK. With the organisation and sector having an increased profile in the years since its founding, the new name will create future opportunities whilst retaining its track record and heritage.
At Tusko, we believe in strategic communications that are not just good, but brave and purposeful. The renaming of Better Society Capital is a testament to evolving strategic goals that focus more sharply on creating a better society through impactful investment. Our collaboration with Better Society Capital has allowed us to shine a spotlight on phenomenal initiatives like Wagestream, Wellington Orbit, Outside the Box, Fair for You, West London Zone, and others.
But how do we ensure these stories resonate and inspire?
The answer lies in masterful storytelling through video content creation. By bringing the human element front and centre, we connect viewers emotionally with the initiatives Better Society Capital invests in.
It's about showing, not just telling, and making sure the message hits home.
We’d love to share the new films we’ve created for Better Society Capital, but we’re waiting for them to go live with it.

Better Society and Good Finance
Better Society have also been involved in pivotal initiatives in recent years, including helping to create Good Finance, an organisation which helps social purpose organisations navigate social investment; enabling retail investors to access impact opportunities for the first time via the Schroder BSC Social Impact Trust; partnering with the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities in a trailblazing scheme to support families in temporary accommodation; helping to facilitate the largest ever transfer of UK renewable energy assets to community ownership; and a pioneering report on the fiscal and social benefits of government working with social investors.
What people are saying:
Stephen Muers, Chief Executive of Better Society Capital, said:“Better Society Capital has now been working to bring investors alongside us to tackle social problems for over twelve years, and we have seen remarkable success from the organisations that we have been able to support. This evolution to Better Society Capital provides opportunity to reaffirm our mission and open up new opportunities to help maximise value for government, private investors, and the social purpose organisations who need it.”
Robin Hindle Fisher, Chair of Better Society Capital, said:
“Better Society Capital achieved an enormous amount in its first twelve years and I am excited about the contribution it can make to the market’s growth in the future. For us to do this it is important that we define our role in the sector clearly and ensure that our outward messaging is as true to our mission as possible. I am confident that this change of name will unlock opportunities for BSC, and in turn for the organisations we fund and the investors we partner with, while making the UK a better place to live.”
Gordon Brown, Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, said:
“It is very heartening to see how much has been achieved using unclaimed assets since the legislation to release them passed in 2008. I congratulate the BSC team for its creativity and skill in pursuing its important mission. I wish it continued success in creating a better society under its new name.”
Capital for Good and Storytelling.
Capital can be a powerful catalyst for social change when deployed through social impact investing. This innovative approach focuses on generating measurable social benefits alongside financial returns. By directing funds into organisations dedicated to addressing societal challenges—be it through healthcare, education, or environmental sustainability—social impact investing empowers these entities to expand their reach and enhance their effectiveness. This method not only contributes to the well-being of communities but also demonstrates that investments can simultaneously achieve economic value and social progress.
We caught up with Emma Hickinbotham from Better Society Capital for Tusko’s Changing the Story Podcast. Emma discussed with Co-Founder of Tusko Jake Smith, the importance of capital in making change, and the effectiveness of storytelling to help show this impact.

The Impact of Storytelling.
Demonstrating the impact of social investments is crucial, and effective storytelling is key to this process. Visual media plays an essential role in illustrating the tangible benefits and real-life changes brought about by these investments. Compelling narratives and engaging visuals not only capture attention but also deepen understanding and empathy among audiences, making the case for social impact investing more powerful and persuasive. By vividly showcasing success stories, visual storytelling ensures that the message of positive change resonates widely and encourages continued support and investment.
