Web Design: Increasing engagement and donations
Steps Charity, or simply Steps, exist to to support and educate people with experiences of lower limb conditions in the UK - this includes families who are affected, children and adults who have conditions, and medical professionals who administer care.
Steps felt that their website was difficult to navigate, and often had people call their helpline for information that should have been easily found on their website. The website was also designed to engage donors and ask for regular financial support via a donation function on their page. However, they felt that this wasn’t achieving the level of donation they wanted to reach. With more people using the Internet to find information, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and general trends in user behaviour, it’s important to have a site that is fit for purpose.
We couldn’t wait to get started helping redesign their website and increase donations.
Firstly, we wanted to talk to their customers to find out a bit more about their experience. We conducted some behavioural analysis and heat mapping of their site to see how people behaved and where they spent time on the site. We also booked in some 1-2-1’s with service users and asked them to not hold back and tell us what they felt about the site, what they liked, what they found challenging, and what simply annoyed them! Using this in combination with Google Analytics and competitor analysis we’ve now set out a plan to help make Steps’ website much more engaging and useful, as well as boost donations!
It’s been extremely enlightening to find out what is working well and what is irking people.
There is some low hanging fruit, but also some more extensive work that needs our attention.
Now we have the data, it’s time to get to work making the site!
