Challenge
Create a series of social first videos looking at the past, present and future of social housing primarily in the UK, but also further afield. We were asked to illustrate and explain to younger audiences some of the reasons why the UK faces a crippling housing crisis, and also address the stigma around social housing in the UK. The videos also had to be content-rich and informative enough to hold the attention of mature audiences.
Insight
Some of the Tusko team either grew up in social housing or their parents did, so they have experience beyond the stereotypical view of social housing which one of our contributors described as ‘a shorthand for deprivation and social issues’. This enabled us to take a more balanced view to this project. Additionally, as the films take a retrospective look at decisions from WWI up until now, we knew we had to condense key information and messages in an engaging way to keep the films short.
Solution
Focusing on Bristol as a microcosm we cast contributors from three historic housing estates to give us their take on the question of stigma and also the current housing crisis. To provide an overarching narrative to the situation we find ourselves in we asked historians to explain the series of events that led us now. Additionally, we asked leading architects to give their perspective on where it all went wrong. Combining these views we created three bite-size films that challenge stereotypical views of social housing and also the leadership of this country to allow a housing crisis to develop and deepen.
PART 1: THE HISTORY
PART 2: THE ESTATE
PART 3: THE FUTURE
“The films you produced are exactly what was needed – engaging, emotive and content-rich. The films were exceptionally well received.”
